Recent Game Ball Winners Recognized for Exemplary Service

DALTON, Ga. — Dalton Public Schools is proud to announce the recent recipients of the district’s Game Ball Awards, a monthly recognition honoring staff members whose service exemplifies the district’s four core values: expecting excellence, carrying the banner, being a merchant of hope, and serving as champions for students.

These honorees—Bianca Maldonado, Emma Ruiz, Liz Morales, and Mendy Woods of the Human Resources team, along with Saira Laruy, Coordinator of Early Childhood Intervention and Deputy Superintendent Nick Sun—demonstrate exceptional commitment to the operational and relational work that strengthens the entire school community.

The Human Resources team, led by Chief of Human Resources Mendy Woods and including Assistant Director of Human Resources Bianca Maldonado, former Benefits Specialist Emma Ruiz, and Human Resources Assistant Liz Morales, plays a critical leadership role in ensuring districtwide readiness each year. Every spring and summer, the team manages the processing of hundreds of employees who are newly hired, transitioning positions, or exiting the district. Their work involves thousands of coordinated steps requiring precision, collaboration, and deep knowledge of district operations. From job applications and offers to background checks, certification, benefits, retirement, and contract processing, the team ensures accuracy and compliance at every stage. They also maintain timely communication with technology, enrollment, and finance partners to guarantee smooth onboarding and seamless transitions. Their excellence in execution is foundational to Dalton Public Schools’ success; because of their months of preparation and unwavering attention to detail, new employees begin each year fully supported and equipped to serve students.

This honor recognizes not only the HR team’s operational expertise but also their profound impact behind the scenes. Under Ms. Woods’ leadership, their diligence ensures that the district remains fully staffed, organized, and ready to meet the needs of students and families. Their work is essential to the functioning of every school, and Dalton Public Schools extends its sincere appreciation for their exceptional professionalism and service.

Saira Laruy, Coordinator of Early Childhood Intervention, is recognized for her exemplary demonstration of ā€œCarrying the Bannerā€ and for embodying the district’s commitment to hope, inclusion, and student-centered care. At a recent district event assisting families with accessing the Rooms app, Saira immediately observed that language barriers were preventing many parents from receiving the support they needed. She responded without hesitation—translating, guiding families step-by-step, and ensuring each parent felt welcomed, informed, and empowered. Throughout the event, she continuously checked in on teachers, made helpful announcements, and returned to assist families with compassion and clarity. Even when stepping away briefly, she proactively arranged additional support so no family was left waiting.

Saira’s actions reflect her daily practice: she anticipates needs, bridges gaps, and elevates others with empathy and optimism. She is not only a champion for students but also a genuine merchant of hope, modeling what it means to lead with heart. Her impact extends far beyond individual events; she strengthens relationships, fosters trust, and builds an inclusive environment where every family feels valued. Dalton Public Schools is deeply grateful for Saira’s unwavering dedication and celebrates the transformative difference she makes across the district.

In addition, Dr. Craft presented a Game Ball to Deputy Superintendent Nick Sun in recognition of his exceptional leadership and steadfast service to Dalton Public Schools. Throughout the month of December, Mr. Sun demonstrated calm, decisive leadership and a deep commitment to the district’s mission, ensuring continuity, stability, and support across all departments. His willingness to step forward, collaborate closely with district leaders, and carry the responsibility of day-to-day operations reflects the trust placed in him and his unwavering dedication to students, staff, and families. Dr. Craft noted that Mr. Sun’s leadership exemplifies what it means to ā€œcarry the bannerā€ for Dalton Public Schools—leading with integrity, humility, and a servant’s heart.

Launched by Superintendent Dr. Steven Craft, the Game Ball Awards celebrate district employees whose influence extends beyond a single classroom or campus. The program honors the district’s ā€œunsung heroesā€ā€”individuals whose dedication, leadership, and compassion ensure that systems run effectively and that students, staff, and families receive the support they need to thrive.

These Game Ball recipients—Mendy Woods, Bianca Maldonado, Emma Ruiz, Liz Morales, Saira Laruy, and Nick Sun—exemplify the values that define Dalton Public Schools. Their work demonstrates that supporting education is not only about what happens in classrooms but also about the people who keep the district strong, connected, and forward-moving. Dalton Public Schools congratulates these outstanding staff members and expresses sincere appreciation for their continued service to the district and community.
